La presbiopia
What is Presbyopia
Presbyopia is the progressive loss of the eye's ability to focus on nearby objects. It is not a simple visual defect, but a natural physiological process related to aging.
This process usually begins around the age of 40 and progresses until 60-65. Depending on your current vision, presbyopia may manifest differently:
- Nearsighted (Myopia): The condition starts later and can often be compensated by removing distance glasses to read.
- Farsighted (Hyperopia): The process starts earlier and evolves more rapidly, as the two conditions add up.

What are the causes?
The main cause is the loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens. Over the years, this natural lens inside the eye increases in mass and density, becoming stiffer. The automatic focusing mechanism (accommodation), which is extremely efficient in youth, progressively loses its flexibility.
How to correct Presbyopia
Glasses Solutions
The most immediate and common correction is through specific lenses designed for different daily needs:
- Single Vision Lenses: ideal for those who only need clear vision for close-up tasks.
- Bifocal Lenses: allow for distance and near vision (featuring the typical "segment"), though they are largely replaced by modern technology.
- Multifocal or Progressive Lenses: the most complete solution, allowing clear vision at all distances (far, intermediate, near) with a single pair of glasses.
Multifocal Contact Lenses
Available for several years, these lenses rely on pupillary dynamics. They are an excellent solution for leisure and sports, although for prolonged computer use, glasses often provide superior comfort.
News and Future Perspectives
While a "perfect" surgical procedure that restores the lens's natural elasticity does not yet exist, ophthalmology has made great strides. In the case of cataracts, for example, it is possible to implant multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) that correct presbyopia with excellent results.
